PROBLEM: FrontPage repeatedly prompts for your username and password

This article applies to:

- All Windows 2000 Accounts with Frontpage Extensions
- All Linux Accounts with Frontpage Extensions

Summary

This article explains why FrontPage may keep asking you to enter your username and password when you try to upload a
file.

Possible Causes

- FrontPage uses your Internet Explorer security and network settings. If these are non-specific, FrontPage may not be
able to validate your logon and so will keep prompting you for a username and password.
- If your machine is running Windows NT Server version 4.0 or earlier (or possibly Windows 2000 Server), and you have
Anonymous login set, and the server to which you are publishing requires NTLM authentication, FrontPage may not be
able to successfully authenticate your logon.

To check if Anonymous login is set:

- Select the Internet Options option from the Internet Explorer Tools menu.
- Select the Security tab
- Select the Internet zone from the zone icons
- Click on the Custom Level button
- Scroll down to the bottom of the list and examine the User Authentication options

Solutions

If you are running Windows NT/2000:

Either:

Switch to the default security settings for the Internet zone:

- Select the Internet Options option from the Internet Explorer
- Tools menu.
- Select the Security tab
- Select the Internet zone from the zone icons
- Click on the Default Level button.

or

Change the user login to prompt for the username and password:

- Select the Internet Options option from the Internet Explorer Tools menu
- Select the Security tab\r\n - Select the Internet zone from the zone icons
- Click on the Custom Level button
- Scroll down to the bottom of the list to find the User Authentication options
- Select the Prompt for username and password option

If you are running Windows 98/ME:

- Open the Dial-up Networking utility
- Right click on the appropriate dial-up connection and select the Properties option from the menu that appears
- Select the Server Types tab
- Ensure Log on to network is selected
- Open the Network utility from the control panel
- Make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is installed. If you need to install this you may be asked to insert your
Windows 98/ME disk.
